Legal Research Fees

Like most attorneys, NLRG bills by the hour  For budget estimates given before January 1, 2027, our hourly rates are subject to a 6% computer surcharge.  Our rates, before and after the surcharge, are as follows:

Turnaround Rate (before 6%)

Rate (after 6%)

Normal (6+ business days) $190 $200
Rush (3-5 business days) $235 $250
Expedited Rush (1-2 business days) $285 $300

For budget estimates given on or after January 1, 2027, there is no surcharge.  Our billing rates will then be as follows:

Turnaround Prior Rate (after 6%)

New Rate

Normal (6+ business days) $200 $220
Rush (3-5 business days) $250 $290
Expedited Rush (1-2 business days) $300 $350

For purposes of determining rush rates, we measure time from the date on which you authorize us to start work.

We give you a budget estimate before starting work, and we never exceed the budget without your permission.  Our estimate system gives you complete control over the cost of any project you authorize.

The time needed to complete any given project depends on such factors as the number and complexity of the issues, the jurisdictional focus (one state as opposed to a national search), and the work product. Briefs to the court are typically more expensive than are memoranda to you.

We can provide many different types of products, depending on the complexity of the project and the funds available for research.  Because some cases allow for greater expenditure than others, we offer telephone reports and summary memoranda in order to keep the costs in line. The nature of the work product is in the control of our clients. You decide, not us.

When funds available for research are limited, we are happy to work with you to provide the best possible product within a stated cost limit.

We do not work on a contingent fee basis. In other words, we charge for the time spent on research, not by the result reached. We are aware of any result you desire, and we will present all available authority supporting the result; but we are limited by the available body of statutes and case law.
