Civil rights have remained a prime focal point of American life since the founding of the United states, and recent events have renewed this focus. The first 10 amendments to the Constitution make up the Bill of Rights. Written by James Madison in response to calls from several states for greater constitutional protection for individual liberties, the Bill of Rights lists specific prohibitions on governmental power.
Throughout our nation's history, Congress has passed a number of laws designed to secure these rights and to provide a private right of action for their violation. At NLRG, we have a team of attorneys specializing in civil rights research.
